Description

The Russ Anderson/SMC Figure 8 with ears is a top - choice full - sized descender among professionals in rescue, fire service, police/tactical, and industrial/work fields. It comes in a smaller size compared to another non - NFPA model. This descender is great for single or double rope wraps up to 1/2'' in diameter. The unique 'ears' design prevents ropes from slipping into a girth hitch and makes tying off during rappelling a breeze. The oval carabiner hole can also be used as a belay plate for ropes up to 1/2''. It's crafted from 1/2'' thick solid aluminum bar, heat - treated, and then given a tough hard - anodized finish for long - lasting use.

APPLICATIONS:

  • Mountain and Urban Rescue
  • Industrial Work
  • Tactical Military and Law Enforcement
  • Fire Departments
  • Mountaineering and Caving
Certifications
  • Certified by Underwriter’s Laboratories to surpass the NFPA 1983 “T” - Technical Use rating on 9.5mm to 12.5mm rope.
  • Certified by Underwriter’s Laboratories to surpass the NFPA 1983 “G” - General Use rating on 11mm to 16mm rope.

Using this SMC Figure 8 descender is quite straightforward. First, choose the right rope size within the specified limits (up to 5/8' or 16mm). For single or double wraps of ropes up to 1/2'' in diameter, it works great. Thread the rope through the descender as needed. The 'ears' help keep the rope in place and make it easier to tie off when rappelling. The oval carabiner hole can be used as a belay plate for ropes up to 1/2''. When using, always make sure the ropes are properly secured and there are no kinks. Also, double - check the certifications based on the rope size you're using. As for maintenance, keep it clean and dry. Avoid exposing it to harsh chemicals. After each use, inspect it for any signs of wear and tear, like scratches or dents. If you notice any issues, it's best to get it checked by a professional before using it again.
